How the range is worked out
- Each question has a difficulty level from our QE question bank. A middle-level question is one an average boy sitting the QE test gets right about two times in three.
- In each paper we find the ability that best explains how many your son got right, allowing for how hard those questions were.
- QE's scores are age-standardised: the boys who sit the test average about 100 in each paper. We place your son's ability on that scale and add English and maths, as QE does.
- For 2025 entry, 764 of the 3,433 boys who sat (22%) reached that year's minimum of 220, which this scale also puts near the top quarter. With 15 questions the range is wide; a full timed mock narrows it.
Questions
Is this an official QE paper?
No. The questions are our own, written for QE's English and maths papers, and each one was solved independently by two solvers. QE links to GL Assessment's familiarisation materials.
How accurate is the score?
It is a range, because 15 questions cannot pin down one score. About two times in three your son's level sits inside it. A full timed QE mock narrows it a lot. It is an estimate, never QE's own score.
How long does it take?
15 minutes: English 7 and maths 8. QE does not publish question counts or timings for its papers.
Do we need an account?
No. The marks and the likely score show straight away. A free account adds the topics to fix first, a two-week plan and every answer explained, and keeps them.
What score does QE need?
QE's minimum for 2027 entry is 225. It makes a boy eligible to be considered; places go in score order. The lowest score admitted for 2025 entry was 235.
