GL Mathematics preparation for QE Barnet
QE Maths rewards reading a diagram, graph or story accurately, then a short route you can check. No calculator.
The core topics
| Topic | What to practise | First step |
|---|---|---|
| Number | Place value, factors, fractions, decimals and percentages | Estimate first |
| Ratio | Scaling, sharing and rates | Find one part |
| Measurement | Units, time, money, perimeter and area | Write the units |
| Geometry | Angles, shapes, coordinates and symmetry | Draw it |
| Data | Tables, charts and scales | Read the scale first |
| Problem solving | Several steps in a new context | Say what is asked |
A four-line route
- Name what is asked, with its unit.
- Pick out the values that matter.
- Calculate in the shortest clear chain.
- Check the unit and size before choosing.
Worked example Keep the unit visible
A recipe uses of a litre of water for one batch. A family makes four batches. How many millilitres of water are needed?
Answer: Multiply by the batches, then convert litres to millilitres.
The trap: Stopping at 3 misses the unit the question asks for.
Checking without a calculator
- Use known fraction and percentage facts.
- Estimate before calculating.
- Check with the inverse operation.
- Look for a hidden unit change or second step.
A calm Maths rhythm
- A short single-topic set, explained aloud.
- Mix two topics, including a chart or diagram.
- Add a clock once the method is secure.
- Review skips and guesses, then drill the exact fix.
