Atom, a tutor or free QE preparation: what to compare
For QE, start with the school’s free English and maths familiarisation links. QE also links Atom support for children receiving Pupil Premium, but warns that both sample papers and Atom resources may differ from its exam format. What is officially supported?
QE tests English and maths in multiple-choice papers. Its sample page links GL materials and the Pupil Premium support route. Check that route directly if it may apply to your family. We do not issue Atom discount codes or claim that buying a particular resource secures admission.
Compare what happens after an error

This is a decision checklist, not a claim that we have tested every provider or measured their effectiveness. Use a small trial and your child’s work to judge the fit.
A Year 4 starting point
- Share a passage and ask which detail supports an answer.
- Practise number methods your child can explain, rather than chasing speed first.
- Keep one short note about a skill to revisit.
- If practice causes friction, shorten the task and ask the class teacher about the underlying learning need.
In Year 5, add official familiarisation and independent questions as the foundations become secure. These are our suggestions, not a school-prescribed schedule.
Compare a complete cost
Ask for the total over the period you intend to use, including materials, renewal, holiday sessions, cancellation and any feedback charge. We have not verified a current Atom price or local tutor rate here. Historical forum prices and discount-code searches do not establish today’s checkout total.
Worked example Fictional cost arithmetic
Original teaching example. A fictional plan costs £20 per month for six months, with a £15 workbook. What is the total?
Why this works: 6 × £20 + £15 = £135. These are invented teaching figures, not a provider’s price.
Why the tempting route fails: Comparing just £20 with one tutoring session ignores the length of the commitment.
Keep the admission boundary clear
The current QE FAQ gives 225 as the minimum combined standard for consideration. It does not guarantee an offer. A provider score or raw practice percentage cannot be substituted for the school’s issued result.
